This composition, as are many of my compositions, was composed for the Chancel Choir at my church, St. Barnabas Episcopal Church in Wilmington, DE, and was first sung when the gospel reading included John 14:6, “I am the way, and the truth and the life.” I have always loved the poetry of George Herbert, the early seventeenth-century English poet, mystic, and Anglican priest. I have often sung Ralph Vaughan Williams's song cycle Five Mystical Songs, where I first encountered the poem “Come, My Way, My Truth, My Life.” I had tried to set that wonderful text several times before but was never happy with them until I worked out this setting. I hope you will find it to be tuneful and accessible and strive for a flowing, lilting vocal line and with a light, dance-like feel.
