In Thee Is Gladness

In Thee Is Gladness

This familiar hymn tune is given a modernized Renaissance styling, with meter changes inserted to enhance the lilting quality of the text. Harmonic coloring is given to the organ interludes, as well as the final "Alleluia" in the vocal parts.

Composer Commentary

"In Thee Is Gladness" was commissioned by Amelia Funk, an accomplished organist and former choral editor in New York. Amelia had included, in her letter to me, the original German text, in which I found that the German accents coincided exactly with the English translation. I decided that notating the changing meter of the text gave the piece a Renaissance character. The organ accompaniment is supportive, and adds contrapuntal variety to the texture of the piece, which should be sung in a very light voice with placement as far forward as possible.
