Shadow and Substance

Dan Damon's gentle, folk-like tune and expressive text on the mystery of God are here set for choir and keyboard. Brief interludes separate the three stanzas, which are arranged in a variety of voicings, with the melody passed among the parts, including the piano.

Composer Commentary

I encountered Dan Damon's hymn while working on the 5th edition of A Survey of Christian Hymnody (2010), included it in that book, and made a mental note to come back to it later for a choral setting. I was struck by the epigrammatic character of the text—which, quite appropriately, in my view, quotes from the opening of the old television program The Twilight Zone—and by the gentle nature of the tune. My goal in the setting was to preserve the profound thoughts of the text and the simplicity of the tune while making the hymn practical for and accessible to choirs of modest means.
