Sing to the Lord A New Song

Sing to the Lord A New Song

This anthem presents the familiar text of Psalm 96:1-3 with a buoyant setting in which each voice sings its own melody to portions of the text. These combine in a refreshing counterpoint. The keyboard provides a rhythmic supporting voice based upon both of the vocal melodies. The voice parts are easy to learn because each is an engaging melody on its own.

Composer Commentary

I wrote this anthem for my small church choir (three men, ten women), the Covenant Singers at Covenant Lutheran Church, Milwaukee, Wisconsin. Because of the composition of the choir, singing in three parts is an adventure, and four parts is impossible. I have found that choirs in general enjoy selections that are principally melodic and “share the wealth,” so to speak. The men have their own tune and are not limited to some sort of supporting harmony part. Several other selections written for this group in similar fashion have proven to be hits with them and the congregation because of the essential melodic nature of the piece.

Originally written for singing by my choir in autumn, we have also used this anthem for Thanksgiving, and the psalm text is suitable for Easter, missions, or other festive occasions. Once it is learned, this anthem can be easily pulled out for the summer choir with little additional practice.
