Christmas Carillon: Organ Carols for the Winter Seasons

Christmas Carillon follows the success of an earlier volume by Stover, Carillon: Organ Hymn Preludes. In this collection, Stover features nine preludes on tunes or familiar carols for Advent, Christmas, and Epiphany. All are playable on a two-manual organ.

Composer Commentary

As with my previous volume, Carillon: Organ Hymn Preludes, I've written in a specific musical genre for each tune—a berceuse for "Away in a Manger," a slow blues for "O Come, O Come, Emmanuel," a scherzo for "People, Look East," and so forth.

There are two pieces on "O Morning Star, How Fair and Bright!": a Baroque-style choral prelude imitating Johann Pachelbel’s famous setting, and an unmeasured “Landscape at Dawn,” featuring slowly expanding and contracting pianissimo chords beneath the tune. This piece might be a good and easy way to introduce listeners to more modern techniques without the harshness often associated with avant-garde organ music.
