Composer Commentary

I was researching nineteenth-century American tune books when I ran across this text-tune combination. I was immediately struck by the evocative words and the beautiful tune, both of which seemed to breathe the air of the Appalachian mountains (perhaps the “dulcimer” reference played a part in that). Though the tune has been used with other words, this seemed the perfect combination to me. I could not get the hymn out of my mind until I completed the choral setting!
