Jesus Comes, the Mystery Proclaiming

This 3-part anthem would be an excellent choice for the third Sunday of Advent, which focuses on the theme of joy, or for Christmas Eve or Christmas Day. The melody dances along throughout, and the text centers on images and themes of the prophecy’s fulfillment: the bright star, the angels’ song of welcome, Isaiah’s winter rose, and the Word made flesh.

Composer Commentary

My wife and writing partner Mary Kay Beall almost always writes the text first, and I then decide on a melody and setting. “Jesus Comes” was originally written as a hymn for a church-sponsored contest seeking a new Advent hymn. Months later it was set as a choir anthem. I currently have several piano collections published by Augsburg Fortress, and several choral anthems as well.
