Augsburg Fortress

Partita for organ solo based on "Veni Creator Spiritus', Sarum Plainsong Mode VIII. In seven sections, this splendid contemporary work explores a classic Gregorian chant melody with imagination and vitality. Opening with an expressive and free form recitative, the tune is stated above a rich re-harmonization. An energetic bicinium, which makes use of colorful gap registrations, is followed by a solemn aria for foundations and a solo stop. Bennett then surprises the listener with a highly rhythmic and accented hocket in organo pleno. Concluding the work is a pedal cadenza followed by a French style toccata with the cantus firmus in the pedal.
