Composer Commentary

"The Day of Resurrection!” was written, as are many of my compositions, for a specific occasion and group of forces. In this case, it was for my own congregation, Christ Church Lutheran in Minneapolis, and for its choir and a gifted brass quintet.

I have written several pieces for Easters past. What made this one stand out was that it was inspired by a statement Paul Westermeyer made in the Hymnal Companion to Evangelical Lutheran Worship. Among his comments on this hymn (#361), he says, “‘The day of resurrection!’ is obviously searching for a suitable modern tune! These all work, but none seems quite right.” To me, such a comment is like a bullfighter waving a red cloth in front of a bull, and I charged in to give it a shot. Once I had a tune that seemed workable to me (and that took longer than usual), I set it for assembly, choir, brass, and organ. The tune name, ANASTASEOS HIMERA, is simply a transliteration of the first line of the Greek text. It is a marvelous text, and I hope this tune and setting serve worshipers well.
