Restless Weaver

This relatively new text is set to the tune BEACH SPRING, a tune from The Sacred Harp. The text is an urgent prayer to God, the "restless weaver," for inspiration to work for justice and the responsible care of creation. The tune "weaves" contrapuntally through the texture of the arrangement in response to the imagery employed in the text.

Composer Commentary

This anthem was commissioned by the Urbandale United Church of Christ, Urbandale, Iowa, to honor Elsie P. Naylor who concluded her 44 years serving churches as church musician while serving the Urbandale congregation. Elsie and I shared the privilege of studying with the legendary Russell Saunders, as well as a passion for the role music can play in service to the worship life of a congregation. She chose the text by O. I. Cricket Harrison, which first appeared in The Chalice Hymnal, 1993. I much enjoyed the potential for contrapuntal and aleatoric "weaving" of the wonderful pentatonic melody named BEACH SPRING.
